Ode to Helleborus

by Donna

At certain times of year the zing of gardens as when they’re in spring

is lost as flowering plants prepare to stun us with their future ware

particularly December to March can be a time when colour’s parched

but gardeners need search no more once they’ve discovered Hellebore

Remarkable in all their glory are gardens which are Helleborey

Modest plants, almost understated but so many hues all tastes are sated

From purples dark as the night to pinks and greens and brilliant white

To plant some should be made a law, we all adore the Hellebore

Like an orchid or a passion flower the hellebore has petal power

Except unlike some flowers here they’re hardy and come back each year

Once youv got some, you'll get loads because they self seed where they grows

Your dowdy plants you’ll soon abhor, we all adore the Hellebore

The prices vary, card or cash, from just a snip to quite a stash

But wev found a place the prices canny so you wont have to sell your granny

so rush and get 'em while you can at Harrell’s Hardy Plants in Evesham

the french would exclaim, "ZUT ALORS !"  we all adore the Hellebore

So Helleborus- take the floor - we all adore the hellebore
